Alana Wadkin' s Bio
Hi there, my name is Alana Wadkin. I have severe Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, which means I can't walk, talk or use my hands and I have involuntary movements. I am permanently in a wheelchair; I access the computer via a chinswitch through a scanning method. It's time-consuming, but I wouldn't have been able to achieve half the things I have without it.
I have been interested in ICT and design since I was very young. Although my real love is for music and theatre.
Having a severe physical disability, the computer also plays a vital role in my communication, expression and independence. I started using a BBC Master when I was three years old, moved on to an Apple Macintosh, and now use a PC and laptop with built-in communication aids. I can hold a conversation with them, but it still takes time because I have to use my chinswitch.

I took my interest in computers to Hugh Baird College, achieving a Merit in GNVQ Intermediate ICT and passing the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) in my first year, followed by a two-year AVCE ICT Double Award. My grade was AA. I enhanced my creative skills by taking enrichment classes in Adobe Photoshop. It's amazing what you can learn in just a few months.
I wanted to take a Computing Degree, but unfortunately it was not possible so I progressed on to a Foundation Degree in Management (Business), which I passed with Distinction.
Since leaving college, I keep up-to-date using interactive tutorials and books on various software programs. I'm always looking to push myself and keep my brain active.
I have become interested in script writing and expressing myself through numerous methods, allowing my voice to be heard and creativity to be unleashed. There has also been a massive change in my health, now I’m in a constant state of pain and spasm. When things are at their worst, music is my escape. It was already my passion, but has been a vital part of expressing myself, inspiring me in my work and changing my mindset. Whenever I hear music, I feel alive and happy. That is why I love musicals and concerts so much.
My dream is to break into the musical theatre industry as a script and song writer, and to even be on stage.
